Kerala has over 900 km of interconnected waterways, rivers, lakes and inlets that make up the Kerala Backwaters .  Being one of the main attractions of Kerala it showcase the slow rural life of the interiors.  The backwaters have a unique eco-system – freshwater from the rivers meet the seawater from the Arabian Sea.  Allappey (alapuzha) and Kumarakam are the main centres of backwater tourism with scores of house boats of various kinds and sizes cater to tourists from different countries
 
How to reach Kerala backwater destinations
 
Allepy (alappuzha) hailed as ‘Venice of East’ has a large network of canals that meander through the town.   The nearest airport is Cochin (Kochi) International Airport and the travel time by road is 120 minutes.  The nearest Railway Stations are Alappuzha Railway station and the travel time to board the houseboat is 25 mins by road.  The other nearest railway station is Ernakulam Railway Station and the travel time is 90 minutes by road
 
The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and this small water world is part of the Kuttanad region.  The nearest airport is Cochin (Kochi) International Airport and the travel time by road is 120 minutes.  The nearest Railway Stations are Kottayam Railway station and the travel time to Kumarakom is 35 mins by road.  The other nearest railway station is Ernakulam Railway Station and the travel time is 90 minutes by road
